Adding a Chat Box in StreamElements
Log in to StreamElements:
- Go to StreamElements and log in with your streaming account.
Access Overlays:
- Navigate to the “Overlay Manager” from the dashboard.
Create or Edit an Overlay:
- Click “Create New Overlay” or select an existing overlay to edit.
Add the Chat Box Widget:
- Click the “+” button to add a new widget.
- Navigate to “Stream Tools” and select “Chat Box” from the list.
Customize the Chat Box:
- Adjust settings such as size, font, colors, and behavior according to your preferences.
- You can also configure moderation features and appearance options.
- To make the Chat Box Background transparent, in the setting at the top, select “Custom”
Save Your Overlay:
- Click “Save” in the top-right corner.
- Copy the overlay URL from StreamElements.
Add Chat Box to OBS:
- Open OBS Studio.
- In the “Sources” box, click the “+” button and choose “Browser”.
- Name the source (e.g., “Chat Box”) and click “OK”.
- In the “Properties” window, paste the copied URL into the “URL” field.
- Adjust the “Width” and “Height” as needed.
- Click “OK” to add the chat box.
Adding a Chat Box from Streamlabs Dashoard
Log in to Streamlabs:
- Go to Streamlabs and log in with your streaming account.
Access Alert Box Settings:
- Navigate to the “Alert Box” or “Widgets” section on the Streamlabs dashboard.
Add or Configure Chat Box:
- Look for the “Chat Box” widget in the list of available widgets.
- Customize the chat box settings such as size, font, colors, and scrolling behavior.
Get the Widget URL:
- Scroll down to find the “Widget URL” and copy the URL provided.
Add Chat Box to OBS:
- Open OBS Studio.
- In the “Sources” box, click the “+” button and choose “Browser”.
- Name the source (e.g., “Chat Box”) and click “OK”.
- In the “Properties” window, paste the Widget URL into the “URL” field.
- Adjust the “Width” and “Height” according to your preferences.
- Click “OK” to add the chat box.
Add a Chat Box in Streamlabs Desktop
Open Streamlabs Desktop:
- Launch Streamlabs Desktop on your computer.
Access the Widgets:
- In the main window, click on “+” under the “Sources” box.
Add Chat Box Widget:
- In the “Add Source” menu, scroll down and select “Chat Box” from the list of widgets.
Create New Chat Box:
- A window will pop up asking you to “Create a New Source”. Name your chat box (e.g., “Chat Box”) and click “Add Source”.
Customize Chat Box Settings:
- Widget Settings: In the settings window, you can customize various aspects of the chat box:
- General: Choose the size, position, and visibility options for your chat box.
- Messages: Adjust the settings for how messages appear, such as font size, color, and background.
- Appearance: Customize the style of your chat box, including the text and background colors, as well as opacity.
- Behavior: Set the duration for which messages stay on screen, and adjust scrolling settings if desired.
- Widget Settings: In the settings window, you can customize various aspects of the chat box:
Get Widget URL (Optional):
- If you prefer to use a URL for more customization:
- Click on “Copy URL” to get the link for your chat box widget.
- You can use this URL to add the chat box to other broadcasting tools if needed.

Add the Chat Box to Your Scene:
- After configuring the settings, click “Done” to add the chat box to your scene.
- The chat box will now appear in the list of sources. You can resize and reposition it as needed by clicking and dragging the edges.
Adjust Layer Order:
- Ensure that the chat box is positioned correctly in your scene. You might need to adjust its layer order to make sure it appears above other elements but below overlays or other important elements.
Test the Chat Box:
- To make sure it’s working, you can test it by sending a message in your chat. Ensure that the messages appear as expected in the chat box on your stream.
Additional Tips
- Style and Branding: Customize the chat box to match your stream’s branding and style. You can use different fonts, colors, and sizes to fit your theme.
- Moderation: Use chat moderation tools provided by Streamlabs to manage how messages are displayed.
- Integration with Other Widgets: You can integrate your chat box with other Streamlabs widgets to create a cohesive look for your stream.
